Locked away with the infirmary patient log is a companion--a leather portfolio labeled 'EXCEPTIONAL CASES.'

The records within detail instances of chronic, contagious, or otherwise remarkable maladies observed in infirmary invalids, and are available for the staff's perusal, modification, and expansion.

-----

In order for a case to qualify as exceptional, it must:

a) be related to a malady or illness that is persistent in some way, either as a contagion or a chronic condition,
b) have no immediate remedy, and
c) require unusual means to identify and/or resolve.

Strange and persistent diseases, plagues, blood-'curses', and even particularly resilient or dangerous instances of identifiable conditions all fall under the definition of exceptional.

The purpose of this compendium is to consolidate any cases that require research or trial and error to solve; in-and-out visits for odd problems and long recoveries for mundane afflictions are both already documented in the patient log.

-----

Records may follow any format so long as they contain some basic information:

Quote
  • Identifications for the individual(s) in whom the malady was observed;
  • a description of the malady, including observed signs and symptoms which indicate an anomalous nature;
  • treatments attempted (if any);
  • tests done (if any);
  • recommendations for care or further research;
  • working or proposed solutions (if any).

Here is a dossier of documents penned somewhere in the depths of a laboratory, to which the author has attached a label:
